TITLE

Thank you very much for coming to our booth today. I would like to begin by expressing our sincere gratitude for your kind support.

DENSO’s theme at the Tokyo Motor Show 2002 is “Future Vision in the Environmental and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) Areas.” Today, at the dawn of the 21st century, I wonder how automobiles and road traffic will evolve, particularly, for commercial vehicles. Their distribution and the public transport they provide is an indispensable infrastructure to our society and economy.

On the other hand, people will be come more and more environmentally aware, which requires commercial vehicles with technological developments that give top priority to environmental conservation. Today, diesel engine technology is very controversial because of the pollutants contained in its emissions, however, with its CO2 emission being small and its durability, potential to be the technological core of commercial vehicles is very high.

A variety of products and technologies are being developed under the framework of ITS or Telematics, which integrates wireless communication and information technology. Some of them focus on the enhancement of transport efficiency including the operational control of a commercial vehicle. Drastic improvement to distribution and transport, which will significantly contribute to economy vitalization, is greatly expected by society as well as by industry.

In short, the most important tasks to tackle in the commercial vehicle domain are “reduction of environmental impact of the diesel engine, and enhancement of transport efficiency of the commercial vehicle.”

Let’s move on to the details of our exhibition. At the Tokyo Motor Show 2002, we would like to demonstrate our potential and illustrate our solutions to the commercial vehicle issues I just mentioned.

As for the diesel engine, we will show you with a simple description how DENSO’s common rail type fuel injection technology, as well as intake-exhaust and after treatment control technology, contributes to pollution control of the diesel engine.

In the ITS area, we present how transport efficiency of a vehicle will be enhanced under ITS, and how it will change the vehicle’s actual running situation.

In planning the exhibition, we carefully considered “how we would exhibit the advantages and features of our technologies” and “how we would present out future prospects.” We hope you will take time and look at our display.

Now, let me take a moment to mention DENSO’s future strategies.

The US economy, which underpins the global economy, is showing signs of a slow down. Japan and Europe will face continuing severe economic situations as well. In addition, the global economy will be more uncertain due to concerns over another drastic decline in stock prices, causing consumer confidence to remain weak in the longterm. Under these circumstances, the auto market in 2002 will be as slow as 2001 in Japan, and will shrink in Europe and in the United States.

Under these conditions, we must tackle difficult technological issues as well as the tasks of “how to respond to global customers” and “cost reductions.” As one of the top suppliers in the world, DENSO will reinforce its “technological development” and “manufacturing” advantages as the driving force for our growth. Thus, we will survive the competition in the global market, and make contributions to society as well as to the auto industry. Let me explain these two points in detail.

In future technological development, it will be important to correctly match the requests from society, needs from customers and trends in the latest technologies. We will go ahead with technological development not from a component point of view, but entirely from the aspect of automobiles and road traffic. For optimum development as a whole, we will cooperate closely with car manufacturers to shape the vision of future cars and society.

Let’s take a look at manufacturing. In recent years, the base of Japanese manufacturing has weakened. In some industry, production has been rapidly shifting to China, causing concern over decreased business opportunities in Japan. This is not necessarily applicable to the auto industry, where high reliability and quality are required of the car. We will make maximum use of our advantages in manufacturing, the very core of our business strategies, to carry on the tradition of Japanese manufacturing and strengthen our presence in the global market. We are sure that this will be the source that distinguishes DENSO from its global competitors.

DENSO’s corporate mission is the “contribution to a better world by creating value together.” We mean that we will provide value, far beyond the expectations of our customers and society. DENSO’s commitment in the 21st century is to win the global competition, support the manufacture of cars of the 21st century and make contributions to people and society based on our competence to develop new technologies and advantages in manufacturing.

Thank you.
