Rainwater Harvesting -
Sustaining long-term water supplies in regions where water
resources are scarce
|
 |
 |
Primary water resources throughout the majority of regions
in India are supplied by means of underground water. However
as a result of floods, tidal storms, famine and disease,
water resources are not sufficiently supplemented resulting
in significant water depletion. For this reason, sustaining
long- term water supplies is an ongoing issue in India.
At DENSO KIRLOSKAR INDUSTRIES PVT.LTD, we have embarked
on harvesting rainwater from roads, roof tops, open ground,
and storm water drains by diverting water through PVC
pipes into 3 open wells, approximately 15 feet deep constructed
for the project. In addition to the open wells, a check
dam was also constructed for water collection and to assist
water permeating deep into the earth to increase the ground
water table. DNKI is 100% dependant on Tube Well/Bore
well water and our water table depends on water that can
be collected during the rain. |
 |

How does the water harvesting help to save the wells?
Through this activity rainwater is efficiently collected
from road drains etc, and transferred into the open wells
via 6" PVC pipes. Water is collected in the open
wells and some is allowed to permeate into the ground.
During time of rain, water following through the valley
is also gathered into the open wells to replenish water
supplies.
Check dams have also been constructed to monitor rainfall
levels and allow water to permeate into the ground to
increase the groundwater table.
The water discharge from our bore well is not stable.
And the greenery around the factory grounds, which accounts
for more than 70% of the total area, needs a continuous
water supply. We are currently using rainwater in an attempt
to replace the used water. This formed the idea behind
the concept of harvesting rainwater.
The project has significantly improved water availability
in the factory bore wells and has made more water available
for use on the surrounding gardens.
This project was regarded highly by the environment governing
body of state and was awarded the "Parisara Mitra"
Award as an effective eco friendly activity.
This has encouraged us to take-up other projects like
tree planting, recycling of oil &waste water, and projects
for environmental education among suppliers, local industries
and schools.

Mr. A.M
MUJUMDAR
V.P. DNKI |
We have to remember one thing that "We have not inherited this Earth from our ancestors but borrowed from our children and should return to them in a healthy living condition". If we want to do justice to the environment we should avoid environmental pollution and should not destroy natural resources which is our social obligation & commitment |

"Future wars will not be fought over land, money or anything else". This would be a reality considering the present unsustainable use of water. As surface water become scarcer, bore wells are being dug in close vicinities and are harnessed to an extent that doesn't allow refilling of water |
