ETC (electronic toll collection system)

In Japan, 35% of traffic jams occurring on toll roads happen in front of tollbooth areas. To reduce these jams, an electronic toll collection (ETC) system connects a vehicle with the tollbooth via radio communications, and permits a vehicle to go through first and pay later. After a vehicle that is equipped with an ETC apparatus exchanges information with the tollbooth via electric waves, the tollbooth gate opens automatically and vehicles may pass through without stopping.
DENSO’s ETC system is now widely used and more than 2 million of our ETC systems are spread throughout Japan, which is the top market share in volume of units shipped as of January 2005. These systems conserve fuel and reduce the exhaust gas caused by traffic jams all over Japan.
*ETC:Electronic Toll Collection

If a vehicle can pass through a tollbooth without stopping, it results in less traffic jams in the tollbooth areas and less exhaust gas.
