Automobiles are generally divided into two groups by the fuel they use: gasoline or diesel. Diesel-powered vehicles consume a light oil fuel, known as diesel oil. The emissions in each type of vehicle’s exhaust gases are different due to these different fuels and their methods of combustion. Exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles contain less CO2 and hydrocarbons (HC) than gasoline engines, however they contain more nitrogen oxides (NOx) that might generate acid rain, and particulate matter (PM) which could be related to lung cancer and asthma. |
