The evaporator of a car air conditioner is the component which cools the air inside. The surface of the evaporator has a coating to prevent corrosion. One formula used in manufacturing this coating that is highly effective in preventing rust contains hexavalent chromium.
Hexavalent chromium may have adverse impacts when it enters the human body, and also causes environmental pollution when it seeps into the water table or other underground water sources. Therefore, it has been designated as a hazardous substance, with laws regulating its use in each country.
DENSO continued to study alternatives for hexavalent chromium, and finally developed a plaiting technology for evaporators which provides the same protection against rust as previous products. Furthermore, thanks to other alternative technologies, eliminating the use of hexavalent chromium has spread to the manufacturing processes of other DENSO products in addition to evaporators. |
