Mercury can emit light with only a small electrical current and generate a bright light, so that it is used in many lighting products, such as fluorescent lamps. Mercury, however, is highly toxic and is designated as a hazardous substance because it may harm people’s health if it accumulates in human tissues. Each country has laws and regulations to avoid using mercury.
Mercury has also been used in the bulbs for discharge headlamps, which are very luminous and have a long life. Recently, a bulb without using mercury was developed for the first time in the world. The new bulb requires equipment to control the necessary input voltage and current level in order to emit adequate light.
DENSO was responsible for the development of the ballast used with these lights, a part that enables the bulb to illuminate quickly with a controlled, large flow of electricity, and overcomes the disadvantages of being mercury-free. Furthermore, DENSO downsized the parts by both size and weight (the volume measurement was reduced by 50% and weight by 25%).
