A society in which environmental impacts of
vehicles are close to zero
To realize a sustainable automotive society, DENSO is contributing to the
prevention of global warming and resource depletion, and the reduction of environmentally
hazardous substances through its unique technologies and skills.

Common rail system
Reduced particulate emissions plus reduced nitrogen oxide result from 'world
first' diesel engine technology
Diesel engines offer lower CO2 emissions than
gasoline engines.
The common rail system has reduced particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide
(NOx) emissions which are disadvantages of diesel engines.
Fuel which is atomized under high pressure injection in common rail systems
burns more effectively, thus producing less PM. Conventional single injection
causes a rapid increase in combustion temperature and the production of NOx.
In contrast, the common rail system allows the multiple injection of a small
quantity of fuel to limit the temperature rise and reduce NOx emissions.
DENSO, the first manufacturer in the world to mass-produce common rail systems
in 1995, enabled its systems to operate at 180 MPa (1,800 bar), in 2002, and
will introduce 200 MPa (2,000 bar) system in 2008.
As a total diesel engine management system supplier ranging from air intake products
to exhaust after treatment product including DPF substrates, DENSO will continue
to assist the development of ideal diesel engines.

Hybrid vehicle components
Hybrid vehicles' superior performance through state-of-the-art technologies
With sophisticated control systems that combine the engine and motors, hybrid
vehicles successfully reduce CO2 emissions and yet
deliver powerful acceleration.
To support complex hybrid vehicle systems, DENSO provides state-of-the-art
products including control technologies for the vehicle engine, one of the company's
fields of expertise, and traction inverters-key components for electric motor
control technologies and energy regeneration-and battery monitoring units in
the area of power electronics.
Traction inverters are critical to the control of electric motors. DENSO provides
the world's top power density (output power per unit volume) inverters (as of
July 2007) for the Toyota Lexus LS 600h, with a new cooling technology that limits
the temperature rise of the built-in semiconductor power devices. This cooling
technology is based on both radiator, and electronics technologies which have
been developed through the in-house production of semiconductor devices.

Electric VCT system
Expanded VCT operation area allows more improvement of engine output, fuel
efficiency and exhaust emissions.
The variable cam timing (VCT) system, which controls the timing of intake
and exhaust valves of the engine, has been widely used for automobiles in recent
years.
Conventional hydraulic VCT systems are actuated by engine oil pressure, and
so operation of their mechanisms is limited by low engine oil pressure at engine
cranking or low engine speeds or by high engine oil viscosity at low engine temperatures.
DENSO's electric VCT system, however, flexibly controls valve timing even under
such adverse conditions, thus raising engine output and environmental performance.
DENSO's position as the global leader in the development and manufacture of
VCT systems, based on its precision machining technologies, small motors, and
motor control technologies, has enabled the practical application of this new
electric VCT technology.

PRONAVI
A smooth traffic guided by a next generation car navigation results in reduced
CO2 emissions.
Technological advances of automobiles, such as engine improvements and hybrid
systems, are essential to reduce vehicle CO2 emissions. In addition, if vehicle
users could choose a means of transportation with lower CO2 emissions depending
on their destination and road conditions, they could help reduce their CO2 footprint
in everyday life.
gPRONAVIh represents a new generation of car navigation systems and supports
the driver exactly in this respect. The current traffic conditions are detected
and evaluated by means of the position and speed of probe vehicles*1. Based on
map data, current data and data on traffic situations from the past, PRONAVI
determines the most ecological and least time-consuming route to the destination.
Here, different means of transportation, including public transport, are considered.
PRONAVI offers the convenience of conventional navigation systems and additionally
recommends the most environmentally-friendly alternative to the driver in each
case.
As a leading car navigation system manufacturer, DENSO will create new product
values through taking part in the development of the Probe System.
