TOKYO - DENSO Corporation's Kota Plant received the Prime Minister's Award for Labor Safety from the Japanese government in recognition of its significant records in industrial safety, including the longest zero accident record in Japan. The award was given to DENSO officials at the Prime Minister's residence on July 1.

 |
The Kota Plant started operations as a center for manufacturing automotive integrated circuit wafers and electronic control components in May 1987, and has been accident-free for 17 years and eight months, since October 1987. This constitutes the longest run of business activities without an accident amongst all factories of all manufacturers in Japan. The record amounts to 130 million man-hours, when the number of working hours is calculated to the number of employees*.

“In 1969, we formed the Safety, Health and Environment Department on the principle that creating a safe, worker-friendly workplace is the best policy to both respect human rights and ensure high productivity,“ said Shinro Iwatsuki, senior managing director in charge of DENSO's Production Promotion Center. “The committee established the DENSO Safety and Health Standards and has continued to improve workplace environments and health management.“

 |
The Kota Plant has initiated actions including the organization of safety management groups, ensuring safety standards for facilities based on company standards, and implementing diagnosis and valuation management systems for safety and health. Moreover, all DENSO facilities place a high priority on improvement activities and suggestions from all employees to ensure workplace safety.

The Japanese government gives safety commendations to 25 organizations or individuals every July 1 (National Safety Day) for their efforts to ensure safety in all fields of private sector activities including industrial safety, transport safety, scholastic safety and fire prevention.
