DENSO to Separate Kitakyushu Plant to Establish Production Company
— Common rail system injector components to be added to production line —
Tokyo - DENSO Corporation announced today that its Kitakyushu Plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan, will become a separate production company in April 2006. The new company - DENSO Manufacturing Kitakyushu Co., Ltd.- will have an initial capital investment of approximately US$53 million (approximately 6 billion yen). The current Kitakyushu Plant manufactures car air conditioning systems.
DENSO Manufacturing Kitakyushu will continue to produce air conditioning systems, but will also produce injector components for diesel common rail fuel injection systems. DENSO plans to construct a new plant on the premises of the existing Kitakyushu Plant with an investment of approximately US$177 million (approximately 20 billion yen) to accommodate the new production lines. Production of injector components begins at DENSO Manufacturing Kitakyushu at the end of 2006.
"DENSO Manufacturing Kitakyushu, along with our Nishio (Japan) Plant and Zenmyo (Japan) Plant, will serve as 'mother plants' for our manufacturing facilities around the world," said Hiromi Tokuda, managing officer in charge of DENSO's Powertrain Control System Group. "These plants will manufacture components for the injector, one of the main parts of the diesel common rail system, and ship them to our other facilities in Hungary and Thailand. This will help us meet the growing demand for diesel engine vehicles, particularly in Europe."
The common rail system electronically controls the injection of highly pressurized fuel to reduce the harmful constituents of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in diesel engine emissions. DENSO's system achieves the world's highest injection pressure at 1,800 bar. DENSO recently began producing an 1,800-bar common rail system using piezo injectors.
DENSO Corporation, headquartered in Kariya, Aichi prefecture, Japan, is a leading global supplier of advanced technology, systems and components. Its customers include all the world's major carmakers. Worldwide, the company employs 104,000 people in 31 countries and regions, including Japan. Consolidated global sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005 totaled US$26.2 billion. DENSO common stock is traded on the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges.
