Denso's support riders Koyama and Masbou challenge World Championship Grand Prix 125 cc class!
Koyama running at the front
The surprising rider choices made by team manager Aki Ajo have proven succesful. The Japanese rider Tomoyoshi Koyama has run regularly in the top ten during the opening races. Also the 17-year-old Frenchman Alexis Masbou has scored points with his aggressive riding style. Both riders are rookies in the GP series.
After retiring from seventh position in the first race, Koyama scored his first points among the factory bikes with an impressive sixth place in Estoril, Portugal. The third race in Shanghai, China was even better for "Koyamax", as he finished fifth, only eleven seconds behind the winner. The calm Koyama had also the third fastest lap time in the race.
Koyama's fourth race Le Mans, France, ended in mechanical problems like the first one in Spain's Jerez. In Jerez, the conditions were extraordinary: incredibly strong winds and sand broke several bikes, including Koyama's. In Le Mans Tomoyoshi was unlucky for the second time when the cramkshaft of his bike broke and the promising race ended there.
Tomoyoshi Koyama heads for Mugello in Italy in twelfth position. Mika Kallio leads the 125 cc class after four races. Koyama has gained wide attention from international media. He is regarded as the top candidate for the Rookie of the Year title, after his strong efforts in the opening part of the season.
The 22-year-old Koyama is an accomplished rider despite his young age. Since winning the highly competitive Japanese Champioship in the 125 cc class, he has been on the very top in his native Japan. After riding for Yamaha in Japan, he moved to Honda and the top level of road racing with Ajo Motorsport in 2005. Koyama has adapted quickly to the GP environment:
"The racing weekend in the GP series is very hectic. The best settings for the bike have to be found quickly. In my opinion we have a quite good team spirit and the team seems to be very professional. My goal for this season is to get into the podium a couple of times and finish the season in top nine.", Koyama explains.
The 18-year-old teenager Alexis Masbou has shown his speed in the first races and proved his worth. Masbou scored his first points in the GP series with a respectable 13th position in Estoril, Portugal.
The young Frenchman with an distinctive riding style has been searching for his limits in the first races. He has crashed twice during the first part of the season, in China and his homerace in France. The opening race in Jerez saw him riding in 13th position before an engine break-up forced him into the pits three laps before the finish.
Alexis belongs to Alain Pronec's training group. It is organised by FFM, the governing body of motorcycle sport throughout France. Masbou came very fast to highest level of road racing. He is one of the best of the promising road racing riders in France. Alexis was runner-up in French 125 cc championship in the year 2003 and he was the French champion last year.
"This is more or less the learning year for me. My target for this season is to get points in many GP-events. I will be looking to gather as much experience as possible on the world stage.
Our team is very good. My goal is however in the feature and the top in Grand Prix level" tells Masbou.
The competition has tightened in all World Championship classes, also in the 125 cc class. Although the season is only four races old, the factory teams are bringing in new development versions of their bikes.
Ajo Motorsport intends to stay at pinnacle of development with their own strong know-how and hard work.
"Even though our budget is only a fraction of that of the factory teams, we intend to stay in the competition. We can make decisions quickly, and the results of the first races show that we're going in the right direction. Our techonology is up-to-date. We are also constantly developing new technical solutions to improve speed and reliability.", Team Manager Aki Ajo assures.
